The “Q” for this week’s Q&A Wednesday is all about green coffee extract (GCE). Is it worth it? Is it healthy? Should I try it?? With all the GCE buzz lately, a big, fat, supplement-breakdown “A” is most certainly in order, so let’s get right to it!

What the heck is it?

Green coffee beans are coffee beans that haven’t been roasted yet. They have a higher level of chlorogenic acid (the main ingredient in green coffee extract that helps prevent fat creation in the liver) compared to regular, roasted coffee beans. The extract is produced by soaking the beans in purified water then evaporating the leftover water leaving only the extract behind.

Health benefits

Chlorogenic acid in green coffee is thought to have health benefits for heart diseasediabetesand weight loss. This acid is said to produce anti-obesity effects by slowing the absorption of dietary fat and increasing the burning of body fat for energy. It may help reduce blood pressure and it’s thought to affect how the body handles blood sugar and the metabolism — in a positive way!

The burning question: Does it work for weight loss?

You’re probably not going to love this answer, but a miracle pill – or extract – that makes fat disappear doesn’t exist. Sure, some supplements might help you burn a few extra calories or decrease your appetite a bit, but at the end of the day weight loss will always start with your diet.

In this particular case (GCE), there’s no standardization when it comes to the supplement. Manufacturers don’t have to follow a specific formula, so one product could be made completely different than another and one brand could contain significantly more caffeine than the bottle next to it. If you’re still determined to try it, the first thing you should check is that it contains Chlorogenic acid or GCA (at least 45%). Also look at what else it contains. Some products have filler ingredients that do absolutely nothing for you and actually take away from the potency of the extract.

Pros

GCE promotes the release of glucose in the body and boosts fat burning metabolism in your liver. These two things working together can help to minimize weight gain — and maximize weight loss!

It may improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, promote healthy blood sugar levels and help promote overall health because of its amazing antioxidant properties.

It can boost energy levels because of the increased fat metabolism that’s happening in your liver

Some dieters feel more active during the entire day while taking GCE; this alone will help to burn fat and lose weight!

It can strengthen your immune system because of the antioxidant content

Cons

Some healthcare professionals question whether GCE may raise dangerous levels of homocysteine, a blood-chemical marker for heart disease that can interfere with blood sugar control. And, naturally, concentrated doses of caffeine can cause side effects like headaches, GI upset, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, ringing in the ears, and an irregular heart beat, to name a few.

If you’re using a caffeine-based weight-loss supplement and then stop, you might experience withdrawal symptoms like headache, fatigue, depression, trouble concentrating, nervousness, muscle tension, and a flushed face.

At about $20 per 30-day supply, you could invest in other, more “proven” weight-loss strategies like taking a fitness class or buying more fresh fruits and vegetables.

The supplement industry is a billion-dollar business. Any product you buy is designed for the producer to seriously cash in. With the crazy cash potential in selling GCE, beware of poor quality suppliers… shady shiz happens when big bucks are involved. Stay away from ingredient lists that contain the words ‘carbonites’ or ‘sulfates’.
