Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in plants like fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t have much of an impact on blood sugar levels, making it an acceptable sugar alternative for anyone watching carb or sugar intake. It helps your body absorb vitamins B and C and also has properties that can prevent dental decay. Interestingly, it’s also used as medicine to fight middle ear infections and to help prevent osteoporosis.
As with most things, I suggest moderation since consuming large amounts of xylitol can cause diarrhea, nausea, bloating and gas. Not cute. It’s also used in intravenous feedings to provide more calories, but at extremely high doses it can cause kidney failure. Also, super important to remember: xylitol is toxic to dogs! Keep it away from your furry friends and don’t let them eat baked goods made with it.
